Peugeot Fractal, electric urban coupe
Peugeot unveils a new concept for the Frankfurt Motor Show 2015, The Fractal. The Fractal urban electric coupe offers 450 km of autonomy and paves the way for a production vehicle.
Let’s look first at the technical part of this Fractal coupe. Two engines placed in both front and rear axle are each developing 75 kilowatts for a total of 150 kW/204 hp. They are powered by a lithium-ion battery of 40 kWh (just under double the VE “classic” battery) and Peugeot announces charging by induction and autonomy combined cycle more than 450 km or less than 10 kWh/100 km.
To achieve this figure very low, aerodynamics is neat. The ground clearance is editable 4 cm to 11 cm in the city at only 7 cm on road. To help also contained consumption, Peugeot maintains the 1 ton weight, in addition to consumption, allows a 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and a 1000 m standing start in 28.8 seconds. The lion does not indicate how with a battery of 40 kWh weight is still content. It is assumed that the battery has an energy density double of the current.
Dynamic side precisely, the 4 wheels are steered and the engines are not working fully together. They have indeed different reduction ratios. At low speed, it is mainly the rear engine that is sought (propulsion behavior) before being joined by the front engine beyond 100 km/h. The battery placed in the tunnel of the Fractal participates in the sportiness of the concept.
Aesthetically, Fractal explores new avenues which will likely show the future of Peugeot design. The front light signature stretches to the foot of the grille and lights deconstruct to better fit to the bodywork. At the rear, the banner is scrolling and several functions. In motion, it is obviously the role of rear lights which is filled but stop it is the charge indicator of the battery.
The coupe between the white of the front and matte black accentuates the side of the Fractal coupe. The low glass surface and rear window that falls draw an atypical profile. The driver sits in the middle of the vehicle. In coupe or convertible (with the withdrawal of its removable roof) Fractal is not desirable?
The Fractal is also compact 3.81 m long with only 4 seats. To the overhang reduced to 52 cm are used to clear a large space for passengers. They are installed in individual seats in an Interior that is printed in 3D at 80%. The lion explores indeed these new ways of production.
The driver is pampered with a “cockpit” totally oriented to it. It has two touch screens on either side of the wheel which replaces the usual buttons. This allows changing the functions displayed on these screens. Of course, Fractal has the head-up display or even a 7.7 inch AMOLED touchscreen. Note that the rear passengers also have a touch screen to their ventilation settings but soundscape.
The cabin uses the geometric shapes called form of anechoic chamber. This improves the sound comfort of Fractal, last point of this concept; a 9.1.2 system worked with Focal, French specialist in high-end audio equipment, Subpac for infra subwoofer and sound designer/ Brazilian DJ Amon Tobin. But basically seems well with this Fractal concept that would make a nice proposal for a electric coupe series.
